 05 Tips for optimizing order picking

To achieve efficiency and effectiveness in the order preparation process in terms of cost, time and quality. The following axes can be applied (non-exhaustive list):

Reduce the length of journeys
– By opting for an ABC type classification and storage of references (the most ordered references in volume are located in the most accessible places).
– By respecting preparation circuits which do not require the preparer to pass through the same place several times (optimized sampling order)

Limit load breaks
– By providing information on the movement of goods (rigor of preparers and forklift operators required)
– Using a real-time warehouse management tool
– By replenishing the picking efficiently

Limit the risk of damage
– By setting up order preparation paths that respect the nature of the products (do not simultaneously prepare toxic items with food, for example)
– By picking the articles in an order which respects the weight and density of the articles (during preparation, place the densest articles below the fragile articles)

Optimize the accessibility of articles
– By not placing heavy references in height
– By not storing items too deep in the shelves
– By setting up preparation aisles that allow preparers to cross and double:
– By not launching too many preparations at the same time in the same area (risk of traffic jam in front of the picking locations of references with higher rotation)

Use storage units adapted to the characteristics of the products
– By choosing storage units according to the rotation of the references (for example the dynamics for items with high turnover).
– By choosing storage furniture according to the volume and density of the items.
